The '58 pre-production cars that evolved this far weren't exactly prototypes, they were pretty much ready for sale by then and were being sorted out in the wild without any dazzle scheme paint jobs back then, and it could be one of those. It's interesting in itself that the original grills on those first cars were stamped, making it the 'original' grill for the Mini, not any of the fancier ones. If the pics are are from '61, it lends more credence to a van rework, possibly. Could've shortened it, and a number plate could've 'traveled' a bit before settling.
